Jo Kruithof
Johan (Jo) Kruithof

I have been speaking and writing about Quality and Continuous Improvement with passion, authority and humour for many years. Although now retired, I continue this enthusiasm for the subject through writing and in discussions.

After moderately successful attempts at being an analytical chemist, a chemical engineer and a mathematician, I settled into a career in Information Technology. I gained valuable experience in a variety of industrial and service environments, before eventually deciding there were other careers more suited to my talents and interests.

I became actively involved in the Quality philosophy in 1988, as Quality Development Manager in the data processing division of a large bank. Since early 1992, I have shared my insights through my own company, Quality Insights, dedicated to education, facilitation and consulting in Business Excellence.

I have written and contributed to a number of books, several of which are still actively being sold and used as text books.

Since I entered the Quality field and started writing, teaching and speaking about 'Quality Thinking', many thousands of people in scores of organisations have participated in my workshops or have heard me present.

At the end of 2005, I decided to withdraw from the mainstream of business and spend more time pursuing private interests.

As a speaker and seminar facilitator I have had the privilege of sharing the platform with such notable presenters as Winston Marsh, Malcolm Gray, Doug Malouf, Daniel Johnson and Noel Whittaker.

My many clients have included Melbourne Water, Telstra, Yarra Valley Water, Shire of Mornington, Monash University, R.M.I.T., MITS Ltd, VicRoads, Mars Confectionery, the Australian Army, and Australian Paper.

I was associated with the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) for many years, as a course designer, lecturer and Master students' supervisor. Until the end of 2005, I was also a sessional teacher in a post-gradute diploma course at Swinburne University, lecturing on the management of Continuous Improvement.

My qualifications include three RMIT Associateships and a Fellowhip of the Australian Organisation for Quality. I hold a Certificate IV in Quality Management Assessment and a Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessment. I am still an accredited user of Myers-BriggsType Indicator® materials and am a Member of the Australian Association for Psychological Type.

Books and Articles

four booksMy writing formed the background to my speaking and educating work. My first book 'Quality Thinking - Thinking Quality' was published in 1993 and reprinted in 1996. It was awarded the 1995 Shilkin Prize for Quality literature by the Australian Organisation for Quality. 'The Quality Standards Handbook', co-authored with Jeff Ryall, was released in 1994 with a new edition in 1999. It reached The Australian newspaper's top-ten business titles in 1996 and has won international acclaim. 'Hidden Gold!', a definitive work on Practical Process Improvement, co-authored with Bill Jarrard, was released late in 1999. I am also a co-author of 'The QS-9000 Continuous Improvement Handbook', and have been a contributor to several compilation-style books and to various business publications. My latest published work to-date is the completely updated 'The Quality Systems Handbook', written with Jeff Ryall and published in December 2001. In spite of my retirement, I am still working on a comprehensive Guide to Continuous Improvement, bit quite frankly I don't know when it will see the light of day. I also acts as copy editor for other authors and am the publisher of my wife Mary Kruithof's books.

More recently I've spead my musical wings and started blowing my own trumpet in the Rathdowne Street Big Band.
